Morrisons has become the first supermarket chain in the UK to install AI-powered cameras across its stores, in partnership with Seattle-based Focal Systems. The cameras monitor shelves for four key categories: out-of-stock (OOS), planogram non-compliance (PLANO), low stock (LOW), and restocked items. The data collected helps staff quickly identify areas needing restocking, improving efficiency and allowing more focus on customer service.
Focal Systems’ technology aims to automate decision-making in stores, reducing reliance on human staff. Early trials have shown improved product availability in participating Morrisons stores, echoing the success of similar technology used in thousands of Walmart stores across Canada. This innovation signals a shift toward more automated operations in supermarkets, enhancing both efficiency and customer experience.
