What Shelf Cameras Reveal About Pumpkin Spice Season in the US and UK

Every year you hear someone complain about pumpkin spice season arriving too early. We decided to look at the data and see just how early it’s showing up in your grocery store.

Focal Systems’ shelf cameras record the day each product first appears on a grocery shelf. So we looked at pumpkin spice products across hundreds of grocery stores in the US and UK, from 2024 to 2026. The short version: Pumpkin arrived on American shelves first by a wide margin this year, but British shelves are catching up year over year.

The US got there 45 days earlier

In 2026, half of the US stores we track had pumpkin spice on the shelf by August 7. In the UK, the same point came on 21 September, 45 days later.

The earliest US stores didn’t wait for August at all. The first 10% had pumpkin spice products out in July, while UK shelves had almost none by the end of August. For a typical American shopper, pumpkin spice season now starts while it’s still flip-flop weather, perhaps part of the larger ‘Summerween’ trend.

The UK is catching up

UK shelves are getting earlier every year. Pumpkin spice reached half of UK stores on October 9 in 2024, October 4 in 2025 and September 21 in 2026. That’s 18 days earlier in two years.

The US date moves around more from year to year, so we’ve left it out of the trend. US stores still came out ahead in every year we looked at.

Americans put it in coffee. Brits put it in soup.

The two countries also buy very different pumpkin spice products. In the US, the widest-stocked product is coffee creamer. In the UK, it’s soup.

The UK list has a strong home-scent streak. Nearly half of the UK’s pumpkin spice products are candles or plug-in air fresheners, and we even spotted a pumpkin spice nail varnish. In the US, pumpkin spice is mainly something you eat or drink, usually with coffee.

What it means for retailers

Seasonal ranges live or die on timing. A product that lands two weeks after shoppers start looking for it misses its best weeks of sales, and one that lands too early can sit on shelf taking space from something else.

The launch date in the plan and the date a product actually reaches the shelf are often different. Our cameras check every shelf every hour, so retailers can see when a seasonal range is really out in each store and spot the stores that are running behind. Gaps get flagged in around 30 minutes, compared with 12 to 24 hours for a manual check.

That matters more as seasons start earlier. When pumpkin spice, Halloween and Christmas ranges overlap on the shelf, store teams need to know which changeover to prioritize first.

About the data

Focal Systems’ shelf cameras record the first date each product appears on shelf in each store. Launch dates in this post are the date by which half of stores had pumpkin spice products on shelf. Product rankings are by how many stores stocked each product. The data covers hundreds of grocery stores across the US and UK. US figures come from a smaller set of stores.
